Fountain facts

Some small water features have still water and aquatic plants but with the fight to remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed, many people now prefer items with moving water.

The first fountain to be recorded in history was in 1206 by Iraqi engineer and inventor al-Jazari when the kings of the Artuqid dynasty in Turkey commissioned him to manufacture a machine to raise water for their palaces.

The practical Romans marked the delivery end of aqueducts with a public fountain, a practice that was revived in Rome in the 15th century, with the restored Trevi Fountain Early Modern English employed fountains to refer to a natural spring water or source.

Fountains are charming lawn ornaments that add a finishing touch to any lawn, garden or entrance. The style chosen should compliment the landscape theme.

One of the best features of a fountain as a lawn ornament is the relaxing sound of water flowing. The sound of water will enhance any garden and make it more serene and peaceful.

The most popular "moving water" items are tabletop fountains, statuary fountains and spitting creatures. All rely on a pump to circulate water through the feature. The water is pumped up through plastic tubing and released into the fountain, returning to the bottom where it is pumped up the tubing again. Most pumps run on an electrical connection but some smaller tabletop fountains have batteries. There are also solar units available that require no electrical hook-up.
