Silver-Gilt award

John Woods Nurseries has won a Silver-Gilt Flora award for its Flora pro.activ Show Garden at this year’s Gardeners’ World Live. The award, one of only two Silver-Gilts presented at the event, is the company’s second of the year, following the Silver-Gilt Flora it picked up for the Fruitful Garden at RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May.
Designed by the award winning Paul Baines MSGD, the Flora pro.activ Heart Healthy Garden is inspired by the outdoor space created by John Woods Nurseries for interior design expert and Flora pro.activ brand ambassador, Linda Barker.
The display, created for a theoretical end-of-terrace property on a new build development in an East Anglian town, highlights the physical, mental and social health benefits of gardening. The plot is bordered on two sides by a fence of reclaimed metal re-bar and timber posts which are semi industrial, reflecting the urban location. They also allow greater access to planting around the edges of the plot, making maintenance easier. A stone plinth provides seating in the garden while a high western boundary wall clad with pebbles and timber reflects the materials used throughout the property and demonstrates how, even in a small space, every surface can be used creatively. The garden was constructed at by specialist landscape firm Vandenberg-Hider
Speaking from the event, John Lord, managing director at John Woods Nurseries, said, “We’re thrilled to have won two Silver-Gilt Flora awards in as many months. The Flora pro.activ Show Garden represents our interpretation of the considerable health benefits of gardening through a colourful variety of plants, shrubs, trees, roses, perennials, ferns, grasses, climbers and hedges. This award is for everyone at John Woods Nurseries as well as Paul Baines and the team at Vandenberg-Hider.”
The Flora pro.activ Show Garden can be found on Stand GA14 at the Gardeners’ World Live, which runs until 19 June at the NEC, Birmingham. For full event details, visit
