John Woods Nurseries, the Suffolk-based specialist plants supplier, will launch six new plants to the trade at this year’s Four Oaks Trade Show in Macclesfield.
The County of Staffordshire, Joie de Vivre and Pomponella roses were warmly received at this year’s RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in July this year. For the other three new additions, Hydrangea Bombshell, Physocarpus Little Devil and Fothergilla Blue Shadow, the wraps will be off for the very first time at Four Oaks.
The Hydrangea Bombshell is a compact new paniculata hybrid, extremely free-flowering over a long period. This easy care shrub is perfect for today’s gardens being low maintenance and requiring little or no pruning to keep it compact and tidy. “Four Oaks is an important show for us,” says Jo Davey of John Woods Nurseries. “The show enables us to meet quality retailers in a relaxed environment where there is a strong focus on plants. And, thanks to its location, Four Oaks is also well attended by a good geographical spread of customers.”
The County® of Staffordshire rose, the latest in Mattocks’ County® series, has been developed for the Staffordshire Society. Established in 1905 by a group of London-based Staffordshire gentlemen, the Staffordshire Society today supports worthy causes across the county, holds social gatherings and promotes awareness of Staffordshire’s unique heritage. In 2005, while touring a local rose garden, the Society’s Vice-President, Brian Cox, discovered that Staffordshire, unlike many other UK counties, did not have an eponymous rose. Learning that Mattocks are responsible for all the County® roses, Mr Cox contacted the company, who in turn, began the process of selecting a rose for Staffordshire from the breeding programme.
The County® of Staffordshire rose is characterised by clusters of between five and eight copper yellow flowers that fade to creamy yellow. A repeat flowerer, the disease resistant rose is ideal for landscape gardens and amenities as well as the private garden, at home in sunny borders and patio pots. Height and spread of the County® of Staffordshire rose is 60cm x 50cm. The rose has won International Gold/Silver and Bronze medals in international trials.
