More than a thousand varieties of daffodil, many of them rare and historic, are setting the Trevarno Estate and Gardens ablaze with colour this spring. Recently granted official recognition as the Show Garden for the National Daffodil Collection, the unique varieties on display at Trevarno include flowers from as far away as America, New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Hungary.
The project has been a three-way venture between Trevarno, Ron Scamp – a Cornish daffodil grower with more than 40 years experience and owner of Quality Daffodils, along with Cornwall’s New Generation Daffodils. As steward for the National Collection, Ron has been interested in flowers ever since childhood. After growing up on his uncle’s flower farm in the Tamar Valley, he has gone on to become the proud owner of the largest collection of daffodils in the UK and possibly the largest in Europe.
Ron says, “One of the most important things about the collection is that while it contains modern hybrids, it also contains the historic types – some of them are over 150 years old. They are the same varieties that were growing in Cornwall at the turn of the last century when the county was the epicentre for daffodil breeding.”
