National Gardening Show….31st August – 2nd September 2012

Cheddar Garden Centre has been announced as a main show sponsor for the National Gardening Show – the leading showcase for the finest in Autumn gardening. Part of the successful Park Garden Centres group, Cheddar is returning for a second year and will be running once again the popular Instant Garden Challenge.
This innovative competition will run on each day of the event and star different competing teams drawn from gardening clubs. Each gardening team will be tasked with creating an instant garden using a selection of plants and flowers supplied.

The Show is an ideal day out for gardening fans with lots of features that will whet your appetite, including advice from experts and help on how to grow your own plants and vegetables. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a complete beginner, you will enjoy the event, as will food lovers and people hoping to learn new crafts and discover hidden talents!
Highlights this year include:

  • Three celebrity speakers – Sarah Raven, Toby Buckland and Christine Walkden – all of whom are coming to inspire visitors with their advice and tips on everything from flower arranging to creating the best all year round flower garden
  • Stunning showcase gardens – a real highlight each year
  • The National Giant Vegetables Championships – HUGE vegetables break world records regularly at the show!
  • The show launch of a unique project which will see a nominated local bus stop given a special makeover by the high profile Edible Bus Stop team. The initiative began as a guerrilla community garden project in London and is now going national. It is a great way for communities to transform neglected and disused sites along transport networks into focal points for their neighbourhoods. The winner of the competition will be announced at the Show where the Edible Bus Stop’s feature will be on display. The feature will then be transported to the lucky community’s bus stop for them to enjoy and maintain
  • Bright Green Shoots – innovative gardening entrepreneurs showcase the latest gardening ideas and trends, as selected by award winning garden designer Jo Thompson
  • The Horatio’s Garden Appeal (led by the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust) – the show’s chosen charity this year – with a chance to meet some of the people behind the pioneering rehabilitation garden that has been created by the high profile garden designer, Cleve West, in the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury
  • The National Dahlia Society Show
  • The Secret Gardens of the South West feature
  • Food Halls with fantastic producers – the best of the South West – and daily demonstrations in the Cookery Theatre with three leading South West chefs
