Online degree show at Writtle University

An online degree show at Writtle University College (WUC) launches on May 27th, 2020 in a specially created online gallery. As always, it will showcase the skilled creative work of Writtle’s undergraduates and postgraduates.

In previous years, the Degree Show took place in specially appointed design studios on WUC’s 200 hectare estate. When students and staff realised that this would be impossible in 2020 due to the Coronavirus, they decided to take an innovative new approach.

Senior Lecturer Samantha Humphreys says: “The current situation means we must find new ways of doing what we love. The Design Degree Show is an important annual event for our students. Each year, outstanding work is displayed in a professional manner. Members of the public and industry professionals visit our exhibits. To cancel the show would have been an incredible disappointment. We’re all very proud of our students and staff for moving the entire experience online. Our new virtual exhibition is a symbol of WUC’s hard work, creativity and resilience.”

The exhibition will feature the work of students from Art & the Environment, Contemporary Art & Design, Landscape Architecture & Garden Design and Professional Floristry & Floral Design. The show has been promoted using dynamic art from competition-winner Louise Wells. The third year BA (Hons) Contemporary Art & Design student’s work has been featured in all promotional material and digital invitations.

Students and visitors from around the world will log in for the official launch on Wednesday 27th May from midday in the UK (UTC+1). The time was carefully chosen to accommodate as much of the world as possible, from students who live in the UK, to those who have returned home to Japan and Korea. It’s even a reasonable time on the east coast of the US, for those who like to get up early!

Students and staff have been assisted by generous supporters. The art and design exhibition once again received sponsorship from the Writtle University College Students’ Union, while landscape architecture and garden design has been offered specific student achievement awards by CED Stone Group, Fabrik, and Gillespies. Essex Gardens Trust are also once again kindly offering their People’s Choice Award, which the public will be able to vote for during the first few days of the exhibition.

The local creative community, including Chelmsford Window Gallery and Chelmsford Creative Collective, have been great supporters of the students and the exhibition. Staff and students have also benefitted from the continued support of the International Federation of Landscape Architects, the Landscape Institute, the Society of Garden Designers, and all of the industry contacts that have been involved with WUC’s Landscape Talks lecture series.

The Design Degree Show is a testament to the talent of Writtle University College’s students, and to the success we can all achieve when we work together as a community.
