Job Overview

A privately owned historic 7-acre garden near Petworth, West Sussex is seeking a Skilled Gardener to work alongside the long-serving Head Gardener.

The gardens feature formal mixed borders, productive fruit and vegetable gardens, greenhouses, extensive topiary and hedging, woodland walks, wildflower meadows, orchards, and other traditional garden features. The successful candidate will help maintain and develop the gardens while supporting day-to-day horticultural operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist the Head Gardener with all aspects of garden maintenance and development.
• Spend approximately half of the working week maintaining the vegetable and fruit garden.
• Carry out planting, pruning, cultivation, and general horticultural tasks.
• Take responsibility for the gardens in the Head Gardener’s absence.
• Support part-time gardeners and coordinate with external contractors when required.
• Maintain high horticultural standards across all areas of the estate.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should have:

• At least 3 years’ practical gardening experience.
• Strong knowledge of fruit and vegetable cultivation.
• Good plant identification and horticultural knowledge.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• A proactive approach and ability to work independently.
• Good physical fitness and a genuine interest in traditional horticulture.
