Lindum’s latest innovation, The Green Roof Mat has played a key role in Yorkshire Water’s ‘Future Nature’ show garden which took Silver Gilt at Chelsea.
Approx 30 sq metres were used to ‘green’ two sloping roofs, designed to provide a habitat for insects, butterflies and birds and conserve biodiversity in an urban environment.
Developed in conjunction with University of Sheffield’s Dr Nigel Dunnett, (who designed the plant areas of the garden) and the University’s Green Roof Centre, Green Roof Mat combines wild flowers along with herbs and sedums on a recycled felt base, which can be rolled out as an instant vegetation layer
Lindum’s MD Stephen Fell says that the combination of both wild flowers and sedums not only provides an important sanctuary for our beleaguered bumble bee population but ensures that the ‘mat’ is drought tolerant.
“Recent research from the Green Roof Centre indicates that all six common bumble bee species use wildflower green roofs as habitats while none use those with pure sedum matting,” he explains. ”Given bumblebees’ pivotal role in all ecosystems as the key pollinators of plants, their survival is crucial. With this new product, which combines visual appeal and biodiversity habitat with drought tolerance we are confident that our Green Roof Mat provides the best of all worlds.”
