The M&G Garden has been awarded a prestigious Gold medal at the 2012 RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
The garden, designed for the show’s main sponsors M&G Investments by award-winning landscape and garden designer Andy Sturgeon, is a ‘New English’ style, inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement. It was one of only nine gardens to be awarded a Gold Medal at this year’s show
This is Andy’s sixth Gold medal at the show, where he has also won one Silver Gilt medal and the coveted ‘Best in Show’ Award in 2010.
Andy Sturgeon told The Landscaper “I’m thrilled to have won a Gold medal for M&G Investments for a garden I am really proud of. I wanted to design a garden that would celebrate the great design heritage we have in this country but also one that would encompass tradition and expertise, values that are intrinsic to M&G Investments”.
The garden, which celebrates the fundamental design principles of the English Arts and Crafts Movement includes a succession of formal rooms, set against country garden planting and linked with a 30-metre ‘energy wave’ sculpture hand-crafted in copper rings.
After the show, the trees will be donated to Trees for Cities and the stone to Groundwork, an environmental regeneration charity. Other elements in the garden, including the dramatic copper sculpture and the floating oak bench, will be relocated to other gardens.
M&G Investments recently announced the renewal of its exclusive sponsorship of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for a further two years. The new agreement allows M&G to be the exclusive sponsor during the Show’s centenary anniversary celebrations in 2013.
The 2012 RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs until 26 May
