Horticulturalists affected by the hosepipe ban are using self watering containers to conserve water and maintain displays during dry conditions.
The self watering planters have a built in reservoir with a series of capillaries to ‘suck’ up the water which is dispersed via an expander pad. Because the water is stored under the soil, it doesn’t evaporate so baskets and containers need only be watered once a week.
The self watering containers have been developed by British company Amberol who specialise in sustainable gardening products as well as recycled garden furniture and talking litter bins. The containers come in a range of shapes and sizes including hanging baskets, barrier baskets, tiered planters and half barrels.
