With funding secured by Flintshire County Council’s Regeneration Team, there was an opportunity to enhance the outdoor spaces at Ysgol Treffynnon’s plaza, creating vibrant, practical areas that support learning, wellbeing, and biodiversity.
The aim was to integrate green infrastructure into the school’s environment with solutions that were durable, low-maintenance, and safe for students.
Key objectives included:
- Providing planters with colours that complemented the school buildings, boosting visual appeal
- Supporting student engagement and wellbeing through accessible outdoor learning spaces
- Ensuring healthy plant growth year-round with minimal maintenance
- Contributing to wider green infrastructure initiatives and promoting biodiversity
Challenges and Green-tech Solutions
A key challenge was ensuring that the planters would be robust and durable, integrate seamlessly with the school’s design, and accommodate irrigation and soil. Additional logistical challenges included safe delivery, offloading, and installation within an active school environment.
Green-tech provided:
- Bespoke colour-matched planters: Five planters designed to complement the school’s existing aesthetic
- Green-tree topsoil blend: 18 bags of high-quality growing medium engineered to support establishment and early growth, sourced from sustainable recycled overburden sand and compost material, highlighting Green-tech’s environmental credentials
- Mona Link 24 irrigation system: Specified to suit planter size and planting intent, with full coverage achieved through appropriate filler pipes and collars
- On-site coordination: The Green-tech team managed project communications, provided delivery support, safe offloading and installation guidance, and offered practical assistance to ensure the irrigation system was correctly set up
Through proactive planning and close collaboration with the council, all logistical and practical challenges were successfully managed.
The school’s eco-committee, comprising approximately a dozen pupils from years nine and ten, selected a range of evergreen plants and bulbs for the containers to foster biodiversity.
Impact and Outcome
The completed installation has delivered a striking enhancement to Ysgol Treffynnon’s outdoor areas. Bespoke planters, tailored soil, and a dedicated irrigation system create a sustainable, low-maintenance environment that supports learning, engagement, and wellbeing.
Local media coverage highlighted the value of green infrastructure improvements and the positive impact of youth-focused initiatives on community spaces.
