Light at the end of the tunnel

The Alnwick Garden, the public attraction founded by the Duchess of Northumberland and designed by famous Belgian architects Jacques and Peter Wirtz, is soon to be one step closer to completion with the help of an anonymous donor, whose generous contribution will see the Duchess’s vision for a permanent lighting installation become a reality.
The first phase of the installation, costing in excess of £100k, will be handled by UK lighting specialists, Marl Lighting, and will see the hornbeam pergolas fitted with a state of the art lighting system, transforming the dark evenings into a stunning spectacle of white and blue light.
To mark this exciting development during The Garden’s 10th Anniversary year, the Duchess of Northumberland will be hosting a celebration in The Garden on Saturday 24th November, when the lights will be switched on for the very first time marking the festive season ahead.
The Duchess of Northumberland commented: ‘The Alnwick Garden was designed 17 years ago with lighting in mind. When I saw the original drawings I immediately recognised the huge opportunity for a dynamic lighting programme. This is the first phase of a permanent, flexible installation which will bring the garden to life in the evenings and during the winter months. It will be magical at Christmas and the lights can be enjoyed from The Pavilion without needing to go outside.’
With a Poison Garden, the world’s largest tree house and a bamboo labyrinth to make your head spin, it is these unconventional designs which have seen The Alnwick Garden rise as one of the UK’s most popular attractions, and with this latest development targeting the after dark market, the Duchess has high hopes of attracting additional tourism to the region during the winter months.
‘I believe that when the lighting programme has been completed, visitors will come to Alnwick to see the lights during the shoulder months which will benefit not just TAG but also the town of Alnwick and other service providers. This first phase is stunning and I have worked closely with the specialists, Marl Lighting, to ensure it matches my expectations’.
