First pitch

The first rugby pitch constructed using Fibrelastic rootzone has been completed by Bridgend-based Inscapes at the brand new Lllanelli Scarlets Stadium in Wales. The pitch, which was seeded on Friday 11th July had started to germinate by the 16th and will be playable within a few weeks – well ahead of the official first game scheduled for November.

Fibrelastic has been developed by Mansfield Sand in partnership with the Sports Turf Research Institute to deliver all the proven benefits of a fibre based rootzone. However, Fibrelastic delivers added benefits in three important areas:

• a significant reduction in surface hardness which results in less jarring of players limbs and a lower risk of injury in falls;
• an increase in surface resilience resulting in higher energy feedback to players feet so it is a less tiring surface to play;
• a substantial increase in traction which results in fewer and smaller divots.

Inscapes had undertaken the full construction of the pitch whilst the rest of the 15000 seat stadium was constructed around it. It included installation of drainage, irrigation and under soil heating systems, began on 4th June and was completed on 14th July, almost a month ahead of schedule and exactly to budget
