Citroën offers six lines in its LCV range – which, with Ready to Run conversions now includes more than 150 individual models.

Voted International Van of the Year 2008, the Citroën Dispatch range- includes panel vans, Combis (with crew cab style seating), window vans and a long wheelbase platform cab.

Available in1,000 kg and 1,200 kg payload versions there is a choice of 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0cu.m capacity vans. Load deck lengths are up to 2,584mm plus an optional overhead facility to carry longer items.

Low emission 90, 120 and 136hp HDi Euro 4 diesel engines are specified and safety features include ABS and EBA fitted as standard, plus optional ESP with traction control and Electronic Roll Mitigation system (ERM) Panel vans are specified with Trafficmaster Smartnav/RAC Trackstar stolen vehicle tracking (panel vans only).

For more capacity, the Citroën Relay offers payloads ranging up to 1995kg and includes panel vans, window vans, Combis, chassis cabs and chassis crew cabs. There is a choice of four load lengths, three roof heights and four gross weights and panel van load cubes are from 8-17cu.m. Load decks are up to 4070mm, and with a rear loading height of 530mm, getting machinery or materials on board is no trouble.

Engines are 100, 120 and 160hp HDi Euro 4 diesel models and service intervals have been extended to 25,000 miles.Trafficmaster Smartnav/RAC Trackstar stolen vehicle tracking is specified on panel vans.

New to the range for this year is the C-Crosser Commercial. While it has a relatively small payload at 743kg, this van is based on the C-Crosser 4×4 SUV, so may be useful for contractors having to work on sites requiring an off-roader. It can also tow 2,410kg so larger items of machinery can be transported on a trailer.

With a 2.2 litre HDi engine and six speed manual transmission, the C-Crosser Commercial can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 9.9 seconds and has a maximum speed of 124mph. Fuel consumption is up to 47.9mpg on the extra-urban cycle and 191g/km CO2 emissions.

Front wheel drive, four-wheel drive or transmission lock-up mode can be selected on the move. In four wheel drive mode, engine torque is automatically split between the front and rear axles and when lock-up is selected, all four wheels are driven, but 1.5 times more torque is sent to the rear axle said to be ideal for laden running or towing in snow, sand or mud.

The load compartment volume is 2.3m3 and a load deck height of just 600mm and goods are loaded onto the 1,720mm long load floor via two rear side doors and a two-piece rear tailgate, is a completely flat, 1,720mm long load floor.

Citroen also boosted its environmental credentials this year with its new Airdream emission controls programme. Larger van models meeting the Airdream standard in the current range are the C-Crosser Commercial and Dispatch 2.0HDi 136hp DPFS, said to be the first LCVs in Europe to be fitted with Diesel Particulate Filter Systems, an efficient, self regenerating diesel particulate filter system which reduces particulate emissions to virtually immeasurable levels

Peugeot

Latest version of Peugeot’s Boxer van, produced under an agreement between Peugeot, Citroen and Fiat, offers increased payloads in its 300 range with a GVW from 3.0 to 3.5 tonnes and a payload of 1.1 to 1.5 tonnes.

There are three wheelbases from 3-4.04 m), three body lengths ( helpfully tagged L1, L2, L3) and two heights (H1and H2).

Euro 4 compliant HDi common rail diesel engines have an electronic onboard diagnosis (EOBD) system to monitor exhaust emissions and comprise a 2.2 litre HDi in: 100 bhp and 120 bhp versions and a 157bhp 3.0 litre unit..

Five and six speed gearboxes respectively partner the 100 and 120bhp engines and a six speed manual box is standard with the larger power plant. Peugeot says that fuel consumption has been reduced by nearly 10 per cent compared to the previous Boxer range and the time between maintenance checks has been increased by 30 per cent., reducing running costs.

A heavy duty range of three panel vans and one chassis cab has also been added. Known as the “4” series, maximum axle weights are 2,100 kg for the front axle and 2,400 kg for the rear axle. Interior load space has been increased to a maximum of 15cu.m and two HDi diesel engine options are available: a 2.2 litre 120 bhp (HDi 120) and a 3.0 litre 157 bhp (HDi 157) both fitted with a manual six-speed gearbox.

Pneumatic rear suspension can be specified to offer a constant ride height under all load conditions and the ability to lower the rear of the vehicle to assist loading

For those looking for a smaller van with a respectable payload, the Expert could offer a solution. Produced in conjunction with Citroen, a key feature is the availability of sliding doors on both sides.

Two wheelbases and two roof heights can be specified, with the latest long wheelbase and high roof offering a load volume of up to 7 m3 and a payload of 1200 kg. It is also available as a ‘floor cab’ for conversion

As well as the benefits of improved loading and a constant ride height whatever the load, pneumatic makes it possible to lower the overall height of the van to 1.894m to give access to height restricted sites, which can be useful on this size of van. A manual control can be used to adjust the load height when stationary. The van’s square shape, large load area allows it to accommodate a “Euro” pallet.

Engines are a1.6 litre HDi 90 bhp, 2.0 litre HDi 120 bhp and HDi 136 bhp the latter with a DPFS (Diesel Particulate Filter System). A 2.0 litre 16V 140 bhp petrol engine is also available. The larger engines are paired with a strengthened version of Peugeot’s ML6C 6-speed manual gearbox.

Ssang Yong

SsangYong has impressed many four wheel-drive owners with its high specification, keenly priced vehicles, and this year added commercial versions of the Kyron and Rexton
The SsangYong Kyron C-S and Rexton C-S are converted in the UK with the removal of the rear seats to provide a flat load area, and black tinted rear windows. Both have four-wheel drive.
The Kyron C-S has a payload of 530 kg and a cargo volume of 2,384 litres. The Rexton C-S has a volume of 2,186 litresand a payload of 740 kg. A bulkhead guard to separate driver and passenger from any load being carried is available.
A Mercedes T-Tronic auto transmission is an option on both models. SsangYong is also making a tachograph fitting kit available for both models – something that isn’t available from some competitors.
While the Kyron will tow up to 2.3 tonnes, the Rexton C-S is likely to be of greater interest to landscapers.
A five cylinder, turbo common rail diesel engine produces 165bhpat 4,000rpm and with torque of 340 Nm at 2,400rpm. A five-speed ‘torque on demand’ (TOD) manual transmission normally supplies most power to the rear wheels, but if things get slippery, the system automatically and smoothly distributes power to the axle with the most grip.
The Rexton C-S will tow up to 3.2 tons with its TOD system providing the grip under the most difficult conditions.

Toyota

Toyota offers a medium sized van in the Hiace, featuring a 2.5-litre D-4D common rail diesel engine offering 94 and 115bhp outputs

The core three-seat panel van is available in both short and long wheelbase versions, with GVW of 2.8 and 3.0 tonnes. It can be specified with a tailgate, or swing-out doors that open to 180 degrees. The short wheelbase model is designed to offer enough space to carry two Euro pallets, having a load length of 2,335mm. On long wheelbase versions, this measurement increases to 2,780mm.

The Toyota Dyna chassis cab, a ‘cab forward’ design, is available in 3.0 and 3.5 tonne versions with three basic models: the Dyna 300 with standard wheelbase and Dyna 350 with medium or long wheelbase and double rear wheels. Each is available in chassis cab or dropside alloy form, with the 300 SWB offered with a one-way tipper body and the 350 MWB a three-way tipper. Payloads are from 1,000 to 1,840kg.

A 3.0-litre D-4D engine develops 108bhp at 3,000rpm, with maximum torque of 286Nm available from 1,200 to 1,600rpm. A five-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard to all Dyna models. Dyna is offered in a single specification which includes as standard ABS, driver’s airbag, side impact bars, audio system with CD player, electric windows and reach and rake adjustable steering wheel.

The latest version of the Toyota Hilux pick-up is available with a choice of 3.0-litre D-4D 170 engine offering, giving 169bhp and 343Nm of torque or a 2.5-litre D-4D with 118bhp. Named after the Top Gear tried and failed to destroy a Hilux, the new limited edition Invincible 200 offers a high power, deluxe option at 194bhp

Very much designed for off road work, the Hilux features independent double wishbone front suspension with a rear differential lock on all 4WD 2.5-litre models and limited slip differential standard on all 3.0-litre models. Selectable four-wheel drive, with a shift-on-the-fly facility makes for easier driving in variable conditions.

Toyota points out that the flexible five-speed manual transmission allows steep descents on rough ground to be negotiated safely and securely with the engine on tick-over in first gear, while the high torque output means the Hilux can equally make steep ascents on engine idle, too.

Ground clearance for 4WD models is 212mm and approach and departure angles of up to 30 and 26 degrees respectively enable steep inclines to be tackled. The ramp angle is 25 degrees. From off-road to in-water, performance is strong, with a wading depth of up to 700mm.

Single cab, extra cab and double cab body styles are available with two-wheel drive an option on the single cab. Rear seats in the extra cab are incorporated into the design allowing a rear deck length of 1805mm compared to a double cab’s 1520mm.

The current generation Hilux double cab has 25 per cent more load space than the previous model. Maximum braked towing capacity is 2,250kg for both engines.

For 2009 a new five-speed automatic transmission will be available in the 3.0 D-4D Hilux Double Cab, said to givesmoother performance and improved efficiency over the previous four-speed unit.
The transmission uses artificial intelligence, developed by Toyota, to adapt the gear shift pattern according to driving conditions, monitoring both driver inputs and road factors such as up and downhill gradients. This model has also had a styling facelift and equipment updates including automatic air conditioning.

In common with most manufacturers there are three specification levels – HL2, HL3 and Invincible – but air conditioning, electric windows, remote central locking, ABS and driver and front passenger airbags standard on all versions.

Electric vehicles
Operating a low emission vehicle may soon be on the wish list of potential customers such as local authorities or public companies; it can also cut fuel costs, and in London, side-step the Congestion Charge.

While many mainstream manufacturers are piloting hybrid or biofuel vehicles, several specialists offer established electric options.

The Multitruck Mega from Aixam Mega is one such vehicle, and while it has initially been sold into less demanding industries, there is now a dropside version which could appeal to landscapers.

Powered by eight or 12 batteries, the Multitruck Mega has a range of up to 96km and a top speed of 50kph. An automatic transmission makes for easy driving and all-round suspension smoothes the ride. Payload is up to 450kg and the load bay measures 1.6m by 1.48m.

Tipper, pick-up, chassis cab and box van versions are also available.

French manufacturer Goupil is currently seeking a distributor in the UK, but offers plenty of useful options for its G3 electric vehicle, including a hanging basket waterer, tipper and tipping chip cage. Payload is up to 700kg, and the two seater vehicle is powered by 200 or 240Ah batteries driving via a hydrostatic transmission. Top speed is 54kph.

Electric conversions of traditional commercial vehicles are another option.

Continental Landscapes have introduced the first of three pure electric vans for their contract in the Borough of Poole..

The Smith Edison, a 100 per cent battery powered version of the Ford Transit, operates in the same manner as a conventional van, but with zero emissions.

Paul Rhys-Davies, HR and Fleet Manager at Continental Landscapes Ltd, said: “Deploying electric vehicles like the Smith Edison underlines our dedication to delivering services in the most efficient and environmentally responsible manner.”

The Smith Electric Vehicles are designed and built in the UK. Lithium-Ion Iron Phosphate batteries that achieve a range of 100 miles on a full charge power the Smith Edison. The 90-kilowatt induction motor delivers a top speed of 50mph, which has proven to be sufficient for urban work.

Edison uses approximately 3.5p of electricity per mile and as a pure electric vehicle it qualifies for a free Road Fund Licence (tax disc).

Mr Rhys-Davies said: “The capabilities of the Edison perfectly match the requirements of our fleet. If this first vehicle is a success, we will look at opportunities to deploy further electric vans across our nationwide operations.”

The van will be used to maintain the grounds of Poole Park and other surrounding areas linked to the council.”
