Rid the East of litter

A German Iron Cross from World War One, a man sized toy tiger and a set of false teeth – these are just some of the surprising items that have been picked up by an army of local volunteers working to make their villages, towns, and countryside cleaner and more beautiful. Across the country 248 local voluntary groups have picked up over 30,000 sacks of litter, the equivalent of removing around 270 tonnes (the weight of 39 Routemaster buses) of rubbish from our streets, hedgerows, parks and roadsides.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England and CleanupUK are celebrating the achievements of these groups registered on the LitterAction website. This website provides advice and encouragement to groups and individuals who regularly take action to rid their local area of litter. CPRE and CleanupUK are now calling for more groups and individuals to log on to LitterAction, register and make a visible difference to their areas. To do so, people can go to www.litteraction.org.uk
