The APL is to stage a once-in-a-lifetime event that will bring together all the key players involved in the development of the Olympic Park Parklands. This high profile landscape project is regarded by many as the landscape development that will set the standard in landscape design, implementation and public procurement for the next decade. Working closely with the Olympic Delivery Authority the APL has ensured that the conference will relate the story of the Olympic Parklands; why they have done what they have, what it looks like now and will look like and what are the lessons learned along the way. For a limited number of delegates there will also be the opportunity to tour the Parklands which, being just one year from opening day of the Games should be looking at their absolute best.
The conference will take place at the Radisson Edwardian Hotel in New Providence Wharf, London on Wednesday 13 July 2011. The day begins with a presentation from John Hopkins (Project Sponsor Parklands and Public Realm) who has led the project for the ODA; he will give insight into and explain the thinking behind the overall Park design. This will be followed by a review of the concepts and challenges by LDA Design and Hargreaves, and Dr Peter Shepherd (LDA Design Ecology) will elaborate on the Biodiversity Action Plan for the site. In terms of implementation and construction Professor James Hitchmough (Sheffield University) will explain the perennial and annual flower meadows; Sarah Price (Sarah Price Landscapes) will introduce the London 2012 Gardens, and David Lucas (CLM) will describe the work of the landscape contractors. Nick Coslett (Palmstead Nurseries) will outline the challenges of growing plants for such a project and Tim Marshall will introduce the ten year legacy plan for the Park. All this will tell the story from start to finish, told by the people who have actually made it happen.
