Green Roofs

The World Green Roof Congress opened with keynote speeches from Richard Blakeway, adviser to the Mayor of London on environment issues and architect Ken Yeang.

Welcoming an increasing appetite for green roofs in London, co-founder of Livingroofs.org Dusty Gedge says: "Livingroofs.org Ltd’s 2004 audit told us that London had 76,682m2 of green roofs – equivalent to approximately 10 football pitches – with a further 16,000m2 planned

"An updated audit suggests that between 2005 and 2008 over 163,234 m2 have been installed and that there is over 324,443 m2 planned – equivalent to 46 football pitches. These figures are certainly an under-estimation as data has yet be collected from all London boroughs and green roof companies.

"With new policies and initiatives evolving, greening the roofs of London is likely to become an important element of how London adapts to climate change, making London a healthier and greener city for all."
