Waste Workbook 009

The Packaging Waste Workbook for 2009 is now available. This resource, which is free to HTA members, is produced annually in accordance with the latest updates on compliance from the Environment Agency. Available to download from the HTA website the workbook is an invaluable tool for helping businesses to easily and quickly assess whether you handle 50 tonnes of packaging and what to do if this is the case. All businesses with a turnover of over £2 million and that handle more than 50 tonnes of packaging have to comply with the legislation. Non-compliance can result in heavy fines.

These regulations were introduced into the UK to implement that part of the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive 94/62/EC dealing with the recovery of used (waste) packaging. The objective of the legislation is to reduce the amount of waste (packaging) that goes to landfill by setting recovery and recycling targets that have to be achieved thus reducing the impact on the environment and saving resources. These targets are increasing year on year and are one of the subjects of revision to the Regulations. The overall targets and timescale are set by the European Parliament, and the progress to those levels is set by the member states.

The final submission date for sending data through to the Packaging Waste Compliance Scheme is 15th March 2009 and so members are urged to log on to www.the-hta.org.uk to download a free workbook and guidance notes.

There are two versions available – one for growers and one for garden centres.

As part of the service HTA members also have access to a Packaging Waste Consultant who will provide advice and guidance on use and completion of the book. Contact Alison Smith at the HTA. Tel: 0118 9303132
