Strong Christmas trading

The garden sector saw strong trading in December with members of the HTA’s Retail Management Group reporting excellent sales despite the wintery weather and the possibility that consumers may curb their spending this year.
It was a record year for sales of the biggest selling line in garden centres – the HTA’s National Garden Gift Vouchers (NGGV). Sales for December were 10% up and overall sales were up 4% for the year.
Philip Evason, from Haskins Garden Centres and Chair of the HTA’s Retail Management Group said, “The increase in foot fall we experienced during the year continued through the month of December with sales in the first 3 weeks notably strong. Fresh cut trees continued to sell well increasing by 11%. English grown poinsettias were in demand, following the general trend for other more seasonal lines such as cyclamen, bay trees, and festive outdoor basket arrangements.”
HTA Director of Marketing Andrew Maxted told The Landscaper , “After strong Christmas trading the garden industry is in good shape moving into 2010. There is a sense of optimism and an expectation that the return to growth in garden retail experienced in 2009 will continue with a renewed interest in planting and garden leisure.”
